Jon Burton
Like many sound engineers, Jon Burton started life as a musician, but one with a keen interest in the more technical side of the profession. As a guitarist Jon was more noted for his sound than his technique.
Engineering eventually overtook playing as touring work increased. Clients in the early days included local bands Ride and Radiohead. Since then Jon has toured with Suede, Pulp, Stereophonics, Lulu, Blue, Biffy Clyro and for 20 years, The Prodigy. Working both as FOH engineer and a monitor engineer Jon has worked at the highest level for over thirty-five years. Along with live sound, Jon has worked in TV, and radio, on such shows as Later with Jools, TOTP and TFI Friday.
Jon is also a partner in the Laundry Rooms studio complex in Sheffield which he built from scratch with fellow engineer Dave Hadley. A chance invite to talk for manufacturers Soundcraft 20 years ago led to an interest in education.
Jon now lectures at the University of Derby in Entertainment Engineering. Despite having no prior formal education in sound, in 2017 Jon completed his MSc in Music Technology from York University and is now a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is currently studying for a PhD in audience auditory experiences. He is still an active sound engineer.
